Valid Codablock F input

Anything Code 128 carries is valid here: the full ASCII set including control characters such as tabs, plus accented Latin characters (the live renderer accepted Grüße GmbH without complaint). Digits pack two per codeword, so numeric payloads go twice as far as letters.

Measured against this generator's 44 row layout, the ceiling is 350 letters or 700 digits. The Codablock F specification itself allows up to 2725 characters, but that figure assumes wider rows than this tool produces, so treat 350 and 700 as the working limits.

Common errors and how to fix them

Maximum length exceeded
The 44 row layout is full. This fires past 350 letters or 700 digits, so shorten the payload, switch to digits where the data allows it, or move large loads to PDF417 or Data Matrix.
Content is too long (max 2048 characters).
This is the input field's overall cap, checked before the encoder runs. Codablock F in this generator refuses far below 2048 anyway, so cut the content down rather than working around the field limit.

Size and printing

Width behaves like Code 128: the module width value in mm sets the narrow bar, and each character added to a row widens the whole block. Height is the multiplier to watch, because every one of the up to 44 rows is a full bar row that a laser beam must sweep cleanly; shaving row height to save label space is the classic Codablock F print mistake. Start from a print preset and push DPI toward 600 whenever the module width gets small for your printer.

Can a Code 128 scanner read Codablock F?

Not automatically. The rows are built from Code 128 patterns, but each carries extra row indicators and the reader must reassemble every row in order, so the scanner needs explicit Codablock F support in its firmware.

How much data fits in a Codablock F barcode?

The specification permits up to 2725 characters across 44 rows. This generator's row width tops out sooner: 350 letters or 700 digits, figures measured directly against the live renderer.

Why use Codablock F instead of Data Matrix?

One reason still stands: laser scanners. A stacked code can be read row by row with a sweeping beam, while Data Matrix demands a camera based imager. If your installed fleet is laser only, Codablock F carries more than a single Code 128 without new hardware.

Is Codablock F still used?

It persists in healthcare niches, most visibly on blood bags, and in older logistics systems built around Code 128 data. New projects usually choose Data Matrix, which nearly all current hardware and software decode.
