HIBC Codablock F generator.

HIBC Codablock F stacks rows of Code 128 style encodation, so a long healthcare payload adds rows instead of width. In this generator's preview, a 60 character string that stretches past 2200 pixels as linear HIBC Code 128 stays 495 pixels wide as Codablock F; it simply gains rows. Enter the LIC data bare, and the framing plus check character are handled during rendering.

Valid HIBC Codablock F input

The expected input is the HIBC labeler data with no plus sign in front: an HIBCC assigned labeler code of four characters beginning with a letter, then the product or catalog reference, then one unit of measure digit. Character rules match every other HIBC carrier because they come from the data structure rather than the symbology: capitals, digits, space, and six punctuation marks are legal, and anything else, including lowercase, triggers a validation error. Long inputs wrap into additional stacked rows on their own, though the encoder refuses extreme lengths with its own Maximum length exceeded error well before the tool's 2048 character input cap is reached.

Leave out the + flag and the check character; the encoder inserts both during rendering. A pasted leading plus still passes validation rather than being stripped, so remove it yourself before generating.

Where HIBC Codablock F is used

  • Instrument and implant labels too narrow for any linear HIBC carrier
  • Long combined payloads that would produce an unusably wide single row barcode
  • Facilities that need compatibility with laser scanning equipment but cannot fit a linear symbol

Common errors and how to fix them

HIBC Codablock F must contain only digits, capital letters, spaces and the symbols -.$/+%
Stacking does not widen the alphabet: only the Code 39 era character set is valid HIBC data. Convert letters to capitals and drop unsupported symbols such as commas, hash signs, or umlauts.
Enter the content to encode.
Submit at least the labeler portion of the payload; an empty field cannot produce a preview.
Maximum length exceeded
The Codablock F encoder itself refused the payload; in testing, mixed letter and digit strings fail at roughly 350 characters. Real HIBC labeler strings are a tiny fraction of that, so trim the input back to the primary data.

Size and printing

Codablock F trades height for width: the 13 character sample renders 495 pixels wide here against 874 for the same data in HIBC Code 39, and a 60 character payload keeps that exact 495 pixel width while stacking extra rows. Each row uses Code 128 style encodation with its own row indicator, so suitably configured laser scanners can read it row by row, which is the practical difference from choosing Data Matrix, a symbol that requires a camera imager. Set the module width in millimeters to match your printer's X dimension and export SVG when your label software rescales artwork.

HIBC Codablock F questions

What is Codablock F used for in healthcare labeling?

It is a stacked symbology whose rows are built from Code 128 encodation, accepted by the HIBCC supplier standard as a carrier for HIBC data when a linear code will not fit the label.

Codablock F or Data Matrix for HIBC?

Data Matrix is smaller still and the usual choice for direct part marking, but it needs a camera based imager. Codablock F keeps working with laser scanning hardware that supports stacked symbols, which matters in facilities that have not moved to 2D readers.

Do I include the + and check character when generating HIBC Codablock F?

No. Provide only the labeler code, product number, and unit of measure digit; the plus flag and the modulo 43 check character are inserted for you during rendering.

How many characters fit in a Codablock F barcode?

The specification allows up to 44 stacked rows. In this generator, a 60 character payload renders comfortably, and mixed letter and digit strings stop with a Maximum length exceeded error at roughly 350 characters, still far beyond any HIBC labeler string.
